Population context, not cell-level risk
The optional block view uses 2020 Census residential population and a new extraction of 2021–2025 police reports. It splits generalized report locations among nearby blocks, then spreads both reports and residents over roughly 500 m; faint, blurred shapes signal the modeled geography. It does not estimate daytime population or personal risk. An unpopulated park may receive modeled residents from its neighbors, but those are not measured park visitors. Blocks with fewer than 50 smoothed residents have no color. The two police definitions and reporting rules remain different.
The original count snapshot divided by Census 2021–2025 city populations gives approximately 615 mapped reports per 100,000 resident-years in San Francisco and 1,140 in Oakland. These too are rough reporting proxies, not comparable violent-crime or victimization rates.
